Rare Red Electrical Discharge Photographed in Skies

Three photographers based in the island nation have managed to photograph visual evidence of “red sprites”, one of the most elusive light phenomena in the world, where luminous crimson flashes appear in the heavens.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

This group of artists began their evening to photograph the night sky over the distinctive clay formations in the lower part of the country on a specific autumn evening, before encountering the rare phenomenon.

They thought they would be blessed to get optimal conditions that evening, but their night transformed into “a night to remember,” a team member commented.

“He was checking his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and found he had captured crimson electrical bursts,” he said. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of joyful noises and various reactions in the darkness.”

Explaining Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, produced by thunderstorms. Differing from lightning that strikes downward to the ground, red sprites ascend towards the upper atmosphere, producing shapes that look like vertical forms, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a red sprite was taken – by chance – in that year, by a research unit at the an educational institution.

Momentary and Dreamlike Sightings

They are so brief – persisting for a mere instant – that they are infrequently observed to the human sight, but one photographer was fortunate. “I happened to be looking directly at one when it took place – pure chance looking at the appropriate section of the sky and I saw a brief red flash,” he said.

Seeing the occurrences was a goal for this individual, an honored dark sky artist. “It looks like you witness something that is not real, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is present only momentarily, so it’s really interesting to see.”

Advanced and Artistic Mastery

Recording a red sprite needs a mastery of specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of science and innovative thinking, the photographer stated. “It is a deeply engaging type of photography that’s highly fulfilling as well.”

One of the other individuals commented it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his existence. “I could see the galactic band glowing above the skyline while these giant scarlet filaments of light danced above a thunderstorm hundreds of kilometres away,” he explained.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

As far as he knows, there are no further recordings depicting scarlet electrical bursts and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in one frame.

“This was a singular occasion when you know you are observing an event that may not recur in your lifetime.”
